It’s lonely being a Latic
As you should know by now, this is a new endeavor for me. I have never followed Wigan, so I am frantically trying to learn as much as humanly possible about the team before the season starts next month.
With that in mind, I’m just typing “Wigan Athletic” into Google and seeing where it takes me.
One of those hits sent me to the Wigan Big Soccer page. Seemed like as good a place to start as any, right?
Well, it turns out it’s pretty lonely in there.
When I entered the page, it notified me that I had the opportunity to become the first author of their Wigan Wiki. I had the opportunity to start writing my own Wigan history!
I opted not to take this opportunity, but I initially thought it was a pretty awesome responsibility.
I then cruised around to some of the other EPL pages on Big Soccer, and was disappointed to find that the Wigan experience is not so unique. For god’s sake, there’s not even a history filled out for such luminary sides as Aston Villa! Basically, most of the pages for non-Big Four or outside-London teams are still pretty spartan. Maybe Big Soccer isn’t the authority I once imagined them to be…
The next interesting site I stumbled across was the one run by ESPN. They have an actual correspondent, who had this wonderfully uplifting line in his season wrap:
The first target for any campaign has to be to preserve our Premier status. The fact that we’ve done this means that this season cannot be labelled a complete disapointment. Sometimes when I hear fans moan about the state of our team I think that maybe they’ve forgotten that just a few years ago we were in the old division three, playing teams like Scunthorpe.
I guess it’s all about perspective, right? Man, this is going to be fun
